Subject: Re: placement of hooks for child car seat teather?

I went through the same thing for my kids back in 1997.
I first phoned Volkswagen who gave no opinion or hints - apparently to avoid
any legal ramifications.
I then went to the Listserver for help.
There were various suggestions (drill holes in the "trunk" and put in flush
tie-down hooks; install full shoulder/lap belts and forget the tether) but
what I finally did was this.
Bear in mind I have an '84 Westy...
I got a length of marine rope (nice and strong and not very stretchy) and
tied it to a back seat bench bracket. I then looped the free end through a
1.5" metal ring and fastened the rope end back onto itself with a screw-down
metal clamp. The clamp squeezes the two rope ends together to make a nice
tight fit.
The car seat then sits facing forward, with the back tether going over the
back of the seat, clipped onto the metal ring, and tightened.
The tether is to keep the seat from tipping forward during sudden stops.
Clipped to the ring and combined with the existing lap belt, that car seat
wasn't going anywhere.
Worked well. Easy to unclip - do lap belt first and lift seat up to put
slack on rope. Falls into box under bench to be out of the way.
Worked so well, I did it again for child number 2. 8^)
I think the original thread is still there in the archives...around July
1997.
