I have been frequenting about seven wrecking yards within about 120 miles
of Dallas Texas for the past seven years colecting parts to restore 80-83
Westfalia.
About six months ago I found that the most desirable NLA Air Cooled parts
were being sold off before I could get them. Previously I had almost no
competition for Vanagon Air Cooled parts and I only bought what I had an
immediate need for.
I didn't expect these yard owners to hold inventory for my private
purchasing but when I questioned the yard owners they told me that a guy
in a Ford Pickup truck was buying up all of the parts.
As far as I could tell by the parts missing from the salvage vehicles:
IE, instrument clusters, fuel pumps, oil filler tubes, heater flappers,
sliding door handles, AFMs , Grills, Tail Light and Turn lenses. After he
got through getting all of the NLA and premo parts from the air cooled he
started on the waser boxers.
I'm not sure which E-bay seller he is but he's a pretty clever guy; he
never got anything that couldn't be shipped UPS and he never cut any
wirelooms or destroyed parts getting his items.
The point of the telling of this story is simply, *If you see it in a
wrecking yard and its a part prone to failure, you better get it while
you can*.
