Jay, my man, why on earth would you expend the time to e-mail The List before you have checked something as visible as a blown fuse? It might be a blown fuse, since some wizard at VW chose to use a single node for both branches. I guess the thinking must have been, if you don't have wipers, why would you need a defroster? Or perhaps it's the other way around.

In my experience, the extra load your failing blower motor has been dragging though the X-CNTCT relay may have finally taken its toll. If your lucky, the relay socket is not melted too badly. Should it just be the fuse, it would be wise to be prepared and carry a spare X-CNTCT relay or a prepared jumper.
