It really sounds like a problem with the timer/temp switch.  it may not be
getting power in the normal run position or it may even have a bad
contact.  Use your bently to check that the wires have tthe right voltages
in the right places.  You may need to spend some time checking the book and
tracing circuits, but you may also find just a loose connector.
