While all the other seats you mentioned are fine for their intended
applications, it would be hard to improve on a stock Vanagon seat.  The
Recaro's are great when whipping a sporty car through the esses, but a
Vanagon is a rolling living room.  The freedom of movement the stock seats
afford is what is desirable.

I would say if you can find stock seats which are truly clean and in good
shape, save youself the problems and expense of adapting another seat.  The
only seats which I think are noticeably more comfortable would be from the
French cars I have known and loathed.  Oh, and also the seats I saw in a
business jet the local Marine attack helicopter unit keeps at the ready.  Now
there were some kind of seats.  Deceptively elemental in their simplicity,
covered in leather and as comfortable as anything on which I have ever placed
my butt.  I had to wonder that if a toilet seat goes for $500, how much does
one of them cost!
