well, it was an option... ask lister Ken madsen....he bought a '87 GL from me, that had power mirrors, no power doorlocks or windows, and NO weekender interior.. i put one in the van before he bought it from me...he was there watching me while i was sweating my ass off doing it :<) and lister Brian Circulnick with his '85 GL...who bought a carat interior from me, who didnt have a weekender interior in his '85 GL... and there are others :<) and then there is Pedro Dos Santos, who had a canadian '91 GL with the heated drivers seat :<) but no weekender interior..
