Andrew,

All second generation Toyota 4Runners and various derivatives have mirrors mounted at the A-pillar. They mount on a steel plate welded to the front lower corner on the front doors.

as for Vanagon mirrors being floppy, I have not found that to be the case w/ my power mirrors. It would take 100mph+ winds to change their attitude. I've driven at 95mph w/o so much as a shake from them. Even my "unpowered electirc mirros that I added to my 16" Doka are equally stable. The plus side is there was non unnessary fabrication with the only modification was drilling a single hole for the third mounting screw.
