Yes, my TiiCo has a performance muffler. It's a Walker Ultra-Flow Welded 6"
Round. Some modification to the brackets to make it fit, but not difficult.
Sound is great. Sporty for sure, but not the low frequency muck that you
hear from the coffee can mufflers the kids are hanging on Hondas and
Toyotas. The secret to killing the low fequencies is to make the tailpipe
exiting the muffler as long as you can. The shorter it is the more low the
frequencies sneak through.
Skip the SuperTrapp, they're intended for race use. The baffles will rust,
and you can't direct the output. Wherever the end of the SuperTrapp is will
be black with exhaust soot.
Theoretically, you shouldn't have to compensate for the reduced
backpressure. The Motronic ECU should take care of all of this. That said,
I have bumped the fuel pressure to 40PSI with an adjustable regulator. It
made a big difference, but maybe it would have made a difference with stock
exhaust too. I also have the static ignition timing advanced a couple of
degrees. Probably gets overridden by the ECU, but I'm experimenting.
Before ECU controls, advancing the timing after opening up the exhaust was
standard practice.
With these tweaks our Vanagon is approaching being quick. It has amazing
passing power when you bury the gas at 70 mph.
