Dan, the second gear brake band is engaged because you failed to get the two rods in their proper place or you have moved the adjustment screw. Do not drive it in this condition as you will burn up the second gear brake band and then you will need to disassemble the transmission to replace it. Read the Bentley carefully and you will see what has to be done. There is no way to get the two rods in place properly without dropping the valve body. See my previous post to the list in the archives where this is fully explained. The O-ring you can't find is available from your VW dealer. Do not cheap out on this. Change it now and any other wear parts of the second gear brake band actuator. You have it apart, do it once do it right or you'll be back in there soon.
