Hi Greg,

I really didn't have a choice whether to remove the piston or not. When I removed the circlip holding the piston cover in place, the piston was forced out by spring tension. While it was out, I checked the condition of the seals and found they were hard and brittle, so I replaced them.

Regards,

Alan

Hi folks,

I have been following this thread because my auto tranny has developed a small leak. It runs and shifts fine. I was planning on just replacing the pan gasket and brake band cover o-ring. How would you know if the piston seals are leaking?

Thanks, Greg Stelz 86 GL to westy conversion

Hi Walter,

I didn't remove my transmission. I just replaced the pan gasket, the two 2nd gear brake band piston seals, and two brake band cover O-rings. I bought the new circlip at my local VW dealer and replaced it as a precaution. It probably wasn't necessary. Sounds like maybe you have a kit for a complete transmission overhaul...

Regards,

Alan
