Subject: Oil spraying on hatch (long)
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

To preface this, I recently posted about the oil light and buzzer coming on (shortly) when exiting and slowing down after traveling at about 65 mph for about 30 to 45 minutes. (1990 auto Multivan) I got many responses from checking the sensors to changing the viscosity to having the oil overly filled. (Mine was just changed and is a bit light on the viscosity and was slightly over the max indicator on the dip stick)

This past Saturday we took a round trip drive of about 135 miles. The buzzer is not the problem but upon arriving home I noticed a light spray of clean oil over the hatch. It pretty much extends to the pop top but just all over the back. It's a very fine spray, like cooking oil. I checked the archives and found two mentions of this phenomenon. One when the dip stick tube was loose and the spray originated there and one concerning a crack in the oil filler tube. I waited for daylight and checked both areas today. The dipstick looks and feels fine and tight. The plastic top extension of the oil filler tube is not cracked but is very loose (is this supposed to be? Not loose enough to pull off but lots of wiggle room) and the metal tubing leading to the engine has lots of fresh clean oil. There is evidence of fresh oil leading down to the connection and then back onto the frame of the car. I guess the air going by at 65 mph could have whisked it up and against the hatch back. There is no evidence of oil coming from the drain plug or anywhere in front of the filler tube or coming from the side of it where the filter is. Should I install a clamp where the plastic meets the metal? Should the alarm have sounded during this? (I'm wondering if the second, higher rpm pressure switch died) I lost very little oil. In fact, I am now sitting on the max indicator having been slightly above it. The car dropped 2 or 3 drops of oil after being turned off which I think was residue leading down the pipe. But the engine sounds and runs fine. Oh, I also looked at the engine from the top and there is same spray on the distributer cap which could have been flung there by the belt closest to the oil filler tube. There is no other evidence of oil in the engine.

Thanks in advance for any help.
