We too are planning on visiting Newfoundland this summer. We live
in Halifax and I am visiting my family in Michigan in early May then
in late June we plan on heading out through Sault St. Marie and
across to Ottawa and up the north side of the St. Lawrence River to
where we will head north through Quebec and on to Labrador (
http://www.gov.nf.ca/ ). From Happy Valley - Goose Bay there is a
ferry ( http://www.amxfiles.com/stoneji/97trip/ferry.htm )that goes
down to Newfoundland where we plan on touring around for a few
weeks - Gros Morne National Park is a must and the viking
settlement of L'Anse aux Meadows is interesting. If you always
wanted to go to France, now is a good time as there are 2 islands
off the Newfy coast that still belong to France. We will then take a
(of 2) ferry back to Cape Breton (Nova Scotia) where a drive
around the Park and a visit to Fort Louisberg is great for kids- it is a
"working museum". From there it will be a short drive back to
Halifax for August 1-ish.
From here YOU can go on down through Nova Scotia and take a
ferry back across to Maine, Or drive up and around & though New
Brunswick. NB has a really nice Carlton Park with good hiking (as
does the Gaspe Penn. Try http://www.out-there.com/ . If you guys
are really rugged, you can try the International link of the
Appelachian trail that goes from Mt. Katahdin in Maine to the tip of
the Gaspe Penn in Quebec. Nova Scotia has the Kejimkujik
National Park that is fairly flat but good "winderness" campsites
accessible by canoe. Try http://www.canadianparks.com/
There are 2 good VERY detailed maps of New Brunswick and Nova
Scotia that have EVERY little dirt road on it, If you are interested in
Stealth Camping, these would be great maps. I don't know of one of
these maps for Newfoundland. I can get the ISBNs is you want. I
believe that it is still the case that the first 10 metres of the Newfy
coast is public land so one can camp most anyplace by the ocean-
but check when you get there.
