Could this be a wrist pin problem. You mentioned this is the first oil
change - is this a new engine or a new to you engine?

I have a wrist pin go bad on one of my Beetle engines and a rod bearing go
bad once on another. At early stages of the problem both sounded sort of
like a valve train with slack in it.

Have you pulled the valve cover and tried to rock the rocker arms back and
forth. if there is slack you can feel it. You'll have to rotate the engine
until there is no tension in that particular rocker arm.

Lastly is the head properly torqued. Also heard once that a loose head
makes noise too.

Let us know - the suspense is killing me.
