I missed the original post on the idea of banning vendors, but I'll throw in my two Canadian cents worth...

The problem is NOT all vendors. There are some really helpful people on this list who also happen to sell stuff for our vans - this is not a crime, in fact I encourage it as it is supporting something that I feel most of us hold dear in our lives. Most of the vendors are level headed and don't overreact over the smallest of things. The crime is when people get all OVERLY offensive over the products they sell. It is OK to defend the qualities of your product - this is free speech after all, but there is a point where it becomes too much. The people who aggressively and repeatedly throw stones at other people / vendors should be banned from the list for a period of time. There is a common denominator in all of this - I have been dragged into these flame wars from time to time, along with Ben, Terry, Ron... the list goes on. I work for the local school district during most of the day light hours and there is a big focus on bullies in the schools and how there is ZERO tolerance for bullies - there is no room for bullies in our society.

We have visited this topic a couple of times recently, and again, for the record, I would emphatically oppose banning vendors from the list. In case you haven't noticed, we don't exactly have unlimited choices of parts dealers out there, especially for syncro parts, and they all provide useful information to the list, not just to customers. That in my opinion is a good list member--someone who is interested in/owns vanagons, and tries to help when their knowledge allows.

Have I had my problems with the list vendors? Absolutely. But I've usually been able to resolve them offline, and not drag the list into it. To me, banning them would be kind of like having an Auto Show and not allowing any manufacturers to participate. Pretty soon we'll all own Studebakers if we continue down this road.

My two cents, well ok, three or four cents. bmc :) "Faith will move mountains, but you'd better bring a shovel...."
