CV joints would be my best guess... and it's only a guess...

I'm assuming that this happens when you're traveling at high speed son the highway or when traveling up hill.

I had the same thing happen to me on a long road trip through two mountains passes between Seattle, WA and Sebastopol, CA.

You might want to look there...

My 1983.5 water cooled 1.9L Camper developed a regular progressively louder knocking and vibration emanating from the vicinity of the left rear wheel. Which disappeared when depressing the clutch pedal and was not a permanent ailment. A close look at that wheel assembly and down through the engine access area revealed no obvious complaint. Any suggestions as to where I might look to find the source of this issue?
