I've heard the same thing and the opposite. I can not see how 3 or 4 electrodes would make a difference. The spark is going to take the path of least resistance.

Does anyone know if this is just subjective or is there any real empirical data to back this up?

My experience has been that the three electrode model is better than the four in the 2.1 engine. No experience with either in the 1.9.
