Or, on the flip side, feel free to carry gas in your van...

Early in life, (when some people say I was smarter while others insist I was still dumb as a doorknob), I had a 1974 (or was it a 1976??) bus on which the fuel gauge was non-functional due to some failure of the sender.

We carried two 2.5 gallon thingies of gasoline in the motor compartment (in the driver's side battery area) as insurance for when our log book and fuel mileage guesstimates were wrong. I only used that fuel 3 times over the course of 3 years. No problems, mostly due to good luck.

Like all smart motorists, I carry a pair of decent fire extinguishers.

Don't carry any gas inside your van! What a stupid thing to do. It even bothers me to have to go the mile or so to a gas station to retrieve some gas for the lawn mower and you can rest assured that return home with it directly.
