It has saved my life, well, saved me from a long walk, many times. My '60 panel van with no gas gauge up to my '85 Westy with crushed gas tank. When you buy a new metal 1 gallon can, the lid is sealed pretty well, so there are never fumes and such. Any you can store it in any position. Not saying that it is perfectly safe, but an unopened can stored in a safe location can put your mind at ease about taking long walks in strange places at the wrong time of the night.
