I had the benefit of a new friend in the area who taught me how to drop the transmission. Once I got over that "hump", I think little of having to remove tranny or engine alike. I recommend doing it yourself. Just pay close attention to what is supporting what else. Over-support rather than under-support. I use a steal bar across the engine compartment opening with chains safety linked together as a safety precaution when dropping the engine while using only a small floor jack. Never can be too careful.

I feel a great deal of satisfaction and assurance that the job was done correctly and thoroughly. I don't think I could feel quite the same way, even with my favorite mechanic doing the work.

I have decided to replace the main seal and "O" ring betweent the engine and trasmission to eliminate the small oil leak I have there. I have found a local shop that will do the whole job, parts and labor, for about $300 in three hours. And a little less at VW Cafe in Santa Cruz if I do it on my way during a trip to N. Calif.

However, having a thirst for knowledge, I want to observe and help and see things and decide if the clutch also needs attention. None of my local shops will allow anyone to be in thier shop (due to "insurance" claims.)

Not only does this make me suspicious, but I have a need to know.

So the dillema is to do it myself and endure another learning process or just trust the mechanic. It is not a matter of money as I can afford to do have it done.

I'd like some feedback from people who have done this themselves. I don't mind buying tools and learning, but I'd rather pay someone who has done it and will allow me to participate.

Any advice?
