You could most certainly hook up two batteries in series--with no problem, as long as they are the same type of battery.

A deep cycle, marine battery--whatever, charges at a slower rate ( or should ) to reap the benefits of being long drain battery---

This won't work out tying the two different drain rate batteries in series---
