You probably already know this, but even the extreme shortest distance, or time period that you continue running your engine, after the temp light flashes.... can result in very unpleasant meltdowns occuring. Better to turn it immediately off... let it sit and cool, and THEN drive it those 3 minutes back home, with all the heaters on high. While there are several examples of badness occuring after the temp light has begun flashing, the one that comes to my mind right now is the time my good friend bought a beautiful Audi 400 Quattro, used, and it was in great shape, and ran like a dream. He overheated, randomly, about 6 months later, and pushed it 3 minutes or so to the next exit... Complete aluminum head meltdown.... car totaled, as he could not afford the repairs.
