It is called "Cognitive dissonance." Basically this recognizes how powerful the mind is and how it pacifies the ego. Whenever a decision is made for anything the mind convinces the ego that the choice was the best. If you know the Vanagon (Or Eurovan) is superior but you buy an old Cadillac, cognitive dissonance will convince you that the Cadillac was a wise choice. Just a little bit of trivia.
