I seem to remember a thread some time ago about there being a cable/spring assembly in the Vanagon poptop somewhere (inside the arms?). Never got around to looking into it, but as I recall someone said that they fail fairly early and that is why all of our tops are so hard to open - most of us that are not original owners never even knew that the top was once easier to open. Not sure if this is "Vanagon urban legend" or truth, but I am sure someone can confirm.
