If you feel like fixing it yourself, you can buy "the gear" for $18. I bought 3 gears from Palo ALto (it also fits my '89 Jetta speedo) and I would guess all VW/VDO speedos. If the odometer just starts slipping and then stops completely (speedo still works), this is probably the problem. They have a $25 minimum. The three gears ran $58 with shipping to Delaware.

FWIW, here in SLC, I paid $75 for a fix of my speedo last year. Not a lot of options, so I had to take it.
