I do not really see the logic here..... > AND... if you can really go so far as to say that Waterboxer engines > suck... then we may have an arguement here. ------------------------------------ The logic is overall generic ......... what Vehicle manufactured by any company, anywhere in the world between 1980 an 1991 had enough redeeming qualities to justify an investment of a new $3000.00 engine ? A special interest vehicle like the Westfalia is possibly a qualifying factor but in general the entire auto industry was changing ever part possible over to plastic and improving paint colors. Thats about all they have done in the past twenty years. Here in the US, even 10 year old Lexus, Infinity, Jaguars and BMWs hit the wrecking yards with good bodies. I was offered a 94 VanDen Plas Jag for $800.00 just recently, only needed a $12,000.00 motor. I considered that it might be a good investment if I converted to over to a 350cid Chevy with an engine and a $1400.00 kit. However that wouldn't do anything for the brakes, suspension etc. Standard Vanagons in Texas sell for very little, 80-83 Air Cooled less than $500.00, Westies about $800.00. In the water cooled versions I've turned down 87 Vanagon Wolfsburgs for $800.00 (the next buyer got it for $600.00 after I turned it down) and haven't had a chance to buy an 83.5 to 91 WaserBoxer Westy, haven't seen many survivors. Waser boxers are ten to one more than Air Cooled Vans in the wrecking yards I buy from. Most of the WaserBoxers have a rod sticking through the crank case or the engine in disarray in the back seat with the heads off. So I'm not nailing the Waser Boxers specifically because I know that properly cared for vehicles will last just as long or longer than the air cooled versions. I do contend that we had a quality drought in the auto industry for the past twenty years that continues today in all of the US made vehicles.
