It helps keep all the teeth on the flywheel.

I guess its not a problem with the Vanagon, but there's a common problem with Toyota Camrys where the car won't start because the starter tries to engage a spot on the flywheel with a missing tooth. The missing tooth is caused by people trying to restart an engine that is already running, but too quiet to hear!

Bill --------------------- Hmmm. Now thats one feature I hate. Real PITA when you accidently stall. (Come on now, don't lie. I've been driving sticks for 30 years, in everything from beetles to 18 wheelers. Everybody stalls them once in a while.)

Now we're each entitled to our own opinion, but I'm curious. Of what use has anyone found this feature?
