Closest I've seen to the classic pre-vanagon roofrack that bolts right on is to use Yakima crossbars and their ridiculously named and overpriced, but burly and cool-looking "Megawarrior" (larger version of the "Load Warrior") basket with or without extention. I try to buy Yakima stuff on Ebay; it's almost affordable used, and it generally ages well. If you are handy, you could modify an earlier VW rack or an old Land Rover 109/110 station wagon rack. Also, a shop that sells ladder racks and such for commercial vehicles may have something. I use Yaks and a Rocket Box up top for messy or dangerous items (potential projectiles in an accident) but otherwise try to keep my loads packed as low as possible. -chris

P.S. Has anyone else met or hung out with Land Rover people? I have found more Classic style series Land Rover folks around Hartford, CT than Vanagon people, and I don't even have a Land Rover! Generally seem pretty nice, and great for tire and off-road info. When I get my Syncro set up, I'm gonna try to beg my way into one of their off-road excursions. Eccentricity rocks!
