It could be that the impeller of your "all-water-pumps-are-the-same" water pump is doing some impromptu milling of the engine case. At least that was my experience when it became obvious that the screeching of my van was not merely worn v-belts howling in protest. Upon pulling the water pump, I found some nicely formed annular grooves about .060 inches deep cut into the engine case by the impeller of the junk pump. At first, I overlooked the pump as being the culprit because its seals never leaked a drop. I still pause to wonder in which restricted passageway the cuttings from this ad-lib machine work have chosen to reside.
