There's another option. I don't know if its better, but someone may be interested:

The PO of my van drilled a hole in the shaft of the strut and put a pin in it to hold the hatch open. It worked well, but I decided to replace the struts anyway. I kept the modified strut and collection of cotter pins just in case.
