I admit it.. I do not know if you are refering to the Vanagon engines here, or the new Skoda engines.

Although I have not yet heard that Skoda is known for strange engine defects... my guess is that they would come up with the ultimate engine for this theoretical dream machine... maybe indeed a subaru engine.
