Heya-

I'm still looking for a vanagon and have come across one with a decent
price. The owner states that the rear differential doesn't lock properly,
but the drive shaft has been re-balanced. does this make sense and what
would it cost to repair something like that?

seems  a little bit beyond my mechanical means possibly....
