This may not apply: sevral years ago I had a '70 914-6 that began eating
fuel filters. After 3 I figured out it was the fuel pump (slow learner).
Look in the filter first by poring the gas out of it into a white plastic
container and see what's in the fuel. That will tell you if the origin is
the pump or the tank. My pump was putting brass-looking particles in the
fuel in the filter. The particles and their color will tell you something
about origin. Now, say the f-word 3 times and you'll feel better ;>) ....for
30 seconds.

Well my van has been running perfectly since I put a new fuel pump on it
until tonight. I started it up after being parked for a few hours to go to a
friends house and it is running normal and then all of a sudden NO power. I
thought well maybe the engine is cold and doesn't want to go up near 4k rpm,
so I upshift and keep on going and it stalls every couple minutes. I get to
the point where if I try to drive it dies. I restart, it idles and then I go
forward and it dies. A few taps on the fuel filter and I can drive a few
blocks. I repeat this process until I get home (several miles away in the
snow).
I feel very angry as I thought my fuel problems were over. There are only 3
possible solutions.
1. bad fuel pump (very unlikely)
2. ice in gas (never happened before)
3. rusty crap in fuel tank continues to clog fuel filter (really pissin me
off)
Either way I can't drive it tomorrow which screws me over, and I just spent
my tax return on new shocks and have no money for a tank replacement which I
guess I need. So are my only options to carry around a dozen fuel filters
and replace it every time it does this, or is it possible to drop my tank
and clean all the crud out of it and reinstall within a day or two?
Sorry for venting but I am a little pissed off, all suggestions welcomed.
