Why do you really want to switch from auto tranny to manual tranny - especially when it seems to be operating perfectly?? In the Vanagons the auto tranny is better and stronger than the manual tranny. Manual trannys give lots of trouble, have a long history of broken internal parts. Not so on the auto trannys' In the old aircooled Type II's the auto trannys were pure crap, and the manual trannys were best. Definitely the reverse is true on the Vanagon. Stick with your auto tranny and you will be ahead of the game. John Rodgers
