Subject: Why do I do this to myself....

So, Just a simple little leak from the headgaskets....

Order the gasket kit, no big deal. Look closely, and see a ring of corrosion around the head. Order the new heads

While waiting for them to arrive, I pull the old heads. As I am pulling the right head (WHO thought up exhaust Studs? That is a SILLY idea...) the piston liner decides to come along.

Probably too big a job to do IN the van, so time to pull the engine. Snap some fuel lines (time to replace anyways, apparently) and miss the wire to the Hall Sender (oops) and the engine is out.

Pull the heads - no corrosion whatsoever. I figure I'll put the new ones in anyways... will have some used but good heads for sale soon ;) Pull the pistons - good shape, bad rings....

So, a LOT of $$$ later, I have a very torn apart engine sitting in my garage waiting on new rings. Gave me a chance to replace my clutch disc (new one sitting around for a year) and the leaky oil-breather tube seal, and play with my friends new torque wrench. Got a whole lot more gaskets, and it will be interesting to see where they end up, and if it all goes back together... :)

Have - new heads, lots of coolant hoses, gasket kit + extra gaskets (Boston Bob ROCKS!), RedLine MTL

On Da Way - new piston rings, shift-linkage kit

Need - new hall sender, high pressure fuel hose, oil filler tube (oops again)

Really need - free time to put it back together.

I figure I am in over my head only temporarily... I will figure it all out with much trial and error.... eventually. It better be done by Easter or no biking in Sedona. By the time I am done, my van will hold mysteries for me no longer....

FWIW - the weather in Moab was great on Saturday - started the "Mountain Biker Tan" off right this year :) Moab is a lot more expensive when you can't camp and cook because your Westie is at home in the driveway without an engine... :(

Later
