The bypass I mentioned is on top of the thermostat housing on the 2.1l engines. On the 1.l engines, it is located on that coolant manifold in the engine compartment with the 4 large hoses attached to it. It has a small hose that leads to the pipe on top of the engine. This allows the air to escape and return to the reservoir.

---OK, Thanks for all the responses to this, but everyone is pointing me to the radiator bleeder on the top passenger side of the front radiator.

So the question remains: is there a thermostat bypass valve (a way to open the thermostat manually, with the engine cold)??

I know about the radiator bleeder already mentioned, and the bleeder on TOP of the thermostat, which seems to function the same as the front bleeder, i.e. open a little, watch until clear stream of coolant comes out.

Dennis, you out there? Help us out here... tx, bmc :) "Faith will move mountains, but you'd better bring a shovel...."
