I have a late '85 Westy (chassis number 083XXX) and am ready to buy a new engine from Boston Engine. I have not decided whether to stick with a new 1.9 or go to the 2.1. I believe my '85 may have the late airbox already, but I am not sure. It does have the later single throttle switch, and the vacuum layout is the later style shown in the Bentley. Anyone have any pros or cons about the upgrade? Any mpg difference? It is used mostly for camping and not commuting. I am not looking for more off the line speed. I will use the Digijet FI, the 1.9 exhaust system and coolant hose layout, so I will not have an oil cooler. This is my main concern at this point. Everything else would seem to bolt on, unless I am missing something. The difference in money is only a few hundred dollars as I was planning on keeping my old running (but tired) 1.9l. The airbox problem is a bit of a mystery to me. Why wouldn't the earlier style work if you are using the Digijet FI system the vehicle came with (including the runners)? I know the Bentley says to change it when you go to a 2.1 replacement case. It doesn't say why, though.
