Paul,

You didn't pay too much--you gave what traffic would bear--- My friend, the parts Mgr. at VW says this----

"The Syncro's were neat vehicle's--if you could afford the upkeep--- There wasn't one hell of allot of them sold"--- He told me horror stories of the Syncro's just out of warranty, with the owner's popping for gear boxes, and other miscellaneous running gear, that was astronomical in cost---folks bailing out of current model year Syncro's for nothing because they couldn't afford the repair's, along with the required monthly note----

And here we are today---( not me ) paying the large drackma's to keep them on the road-----

Good concept--- much like the Eurovan---just way beyond of the masses pocketbook---
