Some people will tell you that the more you decide to work on, the more damage you might do.. And it is true, to an extent.

You all may recall I had my front crank shaft seal replaced when I put in a new oil pump a few days ago. This was a good move.

I'm going to replace my cluctch, and during that work do the main seal, "O" ring, and a new clutch pilot bearing and clutch release bearing. Also a new tranny shaft seal and a new starter shaft bushing in the bell housing as Stan and others have suggested so that while things are apart I can maximize the benefits from the labor done to remove the tranny.

I know this is a very naive question, but is the "main seal" the back end crank seal? I've done the front and want to attend to the rear seal if it is a different animal.

I'm still learning more than I ever wanted to know about Vanagon maintenance and loving it. If I were younger I'd do all this work myself, but I can afford to hire it out and have found some good mechanics who I trust.
