Sometimes we tend to get a bit carried away.

VW introduced the wasserboxer to the North American market in the middle of the '83 model year.

Unless the previous owner has done something strange, the engine in your van should be a 1.9L. Kind of anemic (82hp new from the factory) but a fairly solid engine aside from the heads and gasket issues.
