Subject: Sale prices for Vanagons

> Volks, > > I realize that people are trying to help out by posting info about vans on > for sale that they see on the internet. Let me share my sentiments on this. > > I had been looking into this van that Joel posted about in Charlotte, sight > unseen........knowing full well it is headed to the crusher or the auto > auction and going to bring the particular dealer a couple hundred at best. > Now, with this post to the list, his phone has been ringing off the hook, > and he figures he has gold. It ain't. > I had the same experience trying to buy a Vanagon off a 'truck' dealer in New York. I think it was the first Vanagon they ever had on their lot. They told me it had been bought at an auction in Pennsylvania. The previous owner lived in New Jersey but the van was originally from Georgia - it still had the peeling tint on the windows. It was a burgundy Wolfsburg with cruise control but manual windows! 1988 model I think. I cannot remember the price, but knowing the problems Vanagons are prone to, I offered less - "NO" in no uncertain terms they said. I was ready and willing to buy it immediately at my price which was not too far from the offering price. I found another, better van (via the internet) at a much lower price - it even had a newly

rebuilt engine and transmission and the owner was an enthusiast. The van at the truck dealer appeared in ads for months afterwards, they eventually lowered the price to much less that I had offered. It eventaully disappeared from their weekly ad - I would not be surprised if they took it back to an auction to get rid of it.

- David ('87 Wolfsburg)
