I was told there is a diode that fails in the VW radios of this time period. My '89 Jetta radio did the same thing--AM only. It was not cost effective to repair. Look for a newer stereo. I put one out of '97 Golf K2 into my Vanagon that fits beautifully. Get the harness also from the donor car. Looks like it belongs there, plus it has the anti-theft coding which my '85 Westy did not originallly have. It will also control a cd changer.

I know that I'll probably need to buy a new radio/cassette player but I really like my VW factory installed model that is in my 90 multivan so I thought I'd run this by all of you. Maybe I'll get a radio expert. When this thread came up, I was indeed in the process of replacing my antenna. I checked out the archives and it gave me all the hints I needed to find my way to it. However, when I was finished, I still only get AM reception. I thought for sure it was the antenna. (So did my mechanic) Should I just breakdown and buy another cheap radio/cassette player or is there something that I'm missing. The cassette plays fine and the AM sounds.......like AM! I don't know if this would make a difference but the radio has a security code (which I do have) as an anti-theft mechanism.
