I wanted to put a small "rubber-ducky" antenna on my westy, but my audio guy told me that reception would not be nearly as good as with a 30-inch antenna. What I would really like is a flexible one-piece 30-inch antenna like the one on my grand cherokee. It's basically unbreakable... but I can't seem to find one anywhere. I don't want an electric retractable on... just one single piece... any ideas? The oem antenna sucks.

I've noticed that many new cars now use a short, flexible antenna mounted on the roof. It occurs to me that on of these would be good on a Vanagon, especially a Westy, where it could be completely concealed under the side of the luggage rack. Then, the fragile original antenna could be left safely down. Any thoughts?

Philip,

I replaced mine a couple months ago and it didn't seem too difficult. However, it helps to have small hands when running the cable through the dash. I found it helpful to remove the (d)ashtray, the glovebox and the radio. If you have the stock radio, I found that using 4, 2 1/2" 'bright' finish nails (a coat hanger might work, too) in the 4 small holes on the radio face would allow you to easily remove the radio.

Other than that, it was just a matter of removing the old antenna, sliding the new one in and running the cable.

Oh, yeah..., and a lot of swearing when I raked my knuckles on the dash supports...

Brian
