Hello list, Just refilled the trans on my syncro, it took about 4 1/2 qts. I don't know for sure, but I'd say stick with the GL-4 for any transmission. I think the conventional wisdom got muddled up somewhere; GL-5 will eat up the SYNCHROs (syncroniser rings), and I'm fairly sure they are the same composition in all Vanagon trannys. Look for "MTL" on the bottle, and check twice, I had to return 2 bottles, they look identical. The liquid is bright red, low odor for the GL-4, and pale orange and stinky for the GL-5.

I think the general consensus is MT90 for warmer climes, MTL for colder climes. Both meet the specs for your tranny (80 weight). The 75W90 is GL5, and should only be used in the front diff on a syncro, so watch out for that one. bmc :) "Faith will move mountains, but you'd better bring a shovel...."
