The bypass I mentioned is on top of the thermostat housing on the 2.1l
engines. On the 1.l engines, it is located on that coolant manifold in
the engine compartment with the 4 large hoses attached to it. It has a
small hose that leads to the pipe on top of the engine. This allows the
air to escape and return to the reservoir.

Thanks for all the responses to this, but everyone is pointing me to the
radiator bleeder on the top passenger side of the front radiator.

So the question remains:  is there a thermostat bypass valve (a way to
open
the thermostat manually, with the engine cold)??

I know about the radiator bleeder already mentioned, and the bleeder on
TOP
of the thermostat, which seems to function the same as the front
bleeder,
i.e. open a little, watch until clear stream of coolant comes out.
