can someone tell me if the K&N air filter set up for the vanagon replace the stock air filter and snorkel? In my days at the race track I learned the hard way that the best power was made when the engine did not breathe the hot air from the engine compartment but instead had a seperate supply of fresh air The stock air filter and snorkel provide his supply of fresh air. All watercooled vanagons have a cardboard divider to make sure that the intake air did not come from the engine compartment. VW would not spend a dime on something like this if they did not feel the need.
speaking of air filters has anybody installed a 2.1 air flow meter and air filter box in there 83 84 85 vanagon the AFM bore is larger the filter box is MUCH less retrictive. The box clips into the same place on the body but the charcoal breather valve is in the way other than that it looks like a much better set up than the 1.9. I am all ready running the 2.1 intake system and throttle body in my 84 and this looks like the obvious next step to a better breathing engine

I recently put a K&N filter in my Syncro and feel that it made a small
improvement in the power, especially in 4th gear around 55-65. Some
grades on the Interstate that I travel to work each day that used to
keep me from having any ability to accelerate. Now it will gain a few
mph up those. A couple of other hills where it would drop a few mph, it
now holds speed.
