Jack, Make sure you have a good ground wire for the green coax O2 sensor. The green O2 coax wire has an outer sheath (its coax) and this outer sheath goes back to the ECU and comes out as a brown ground wire. This ground wire attaches directly to the engine. It is critical that this is properly grounded otherwise the ECU will get false readings from the 02 sensor and cause lean or too rich situations (usually too rich). On my 90 Westy this ground wire is all brown. The Bentley wire diagrams will tell you your color. Probably brown/red or brown/black. I had the same problems as you until I fixed this ground wire.
