I've followed these antifreeze post for about a year. I don't have a Water Cooled Vanagon. I had an 83 Cadillac with an aluminum bock and aluminum heads, cast in iron sleeves. As part of a recall Cadillac installed a new camshaft in the engine when the vehicle had over 100K on it. I ventured back into the prohibited shop area just to get a look and a report on the progress of the camshaft installation. The aluminum block and heads looked very good in the water cooling jackets. We had always just used Prestone antifreeze. The inside of the aluminum water pump also looked very good and exhibited no corrosion or even discoloration. There may be two completely different allows in the aluminum castings but I know that Prestone and some other brands are manufactured with minute particles of inert ingredients there to seal tiny pin holes in radiators, the cooling system pressure sets them and apparently they stay there until the system is vigorously flushed. Part of the Prestone formulae is water pump lubricant. Our mix was always 50/50% which calculated on volume was -30 degreesF.
