You can try it first, and if it doesn't work, pull the engine. The procedure is the same either way, having enough room to work is the issue. I just redid the cylinder seals and rings on all four on oneof our engines without removing the pistons. You need to fab a ring compressor out of an extra wide hose clamp or banding material, and bend each end up so that you can squeeze them together with a long-nose vice grips to compress the rings.... I can give more details if you are interested...
