The only problem with this method is that the height of the van changes when you drop out the engine (the van is lighter, so it springs up).

I put a 2x4 in the rear compartment, stretching across the engine hatch. Tie some rope to the board, loop it down around the transmission, and tie it back up to the board. Sort of like a jock strap for the transmission--it supports it. Then pull the engine, and the rear of the transmission will be supported only by the rope. My $.02.
