I posted a response about this yesterday. I will draw up a diagram to explain what I mean. You can tie up the transmission to a board that spans the engine hatch. This keeps underneath the van clear for you to crawl around.

The engine should slide out from under the van, perhaps with a little help from jacks that jack up the van a few inches. I like keepin the van resting on wheels because it is stable.
